- William Ray BARFIELD, a son of Susan Frances Boatright and William Leander Barfield, was born on 21 December 1912 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He was named as a son, age 7, in his parents' household in the 1920 Emanuel County census and as age 19 in his mother's household in the 1930 census. He also was listed as a surviving son in his mother's 1953 obituary, and as a surviving brother in LeDora Barfield Brit'?s 1943 obituary, in James Brinson Barfield's 1967 obituary, and in Lora Barfield Neal's 1984 obituary. In addition, he served as a pallbearer at the funeral of Stephen Ernest Boatright. His residence was in Swainsboro, Emanuel County.
He married Venera Neal in Emanuel County on 11 April 1936. She was born on 26 June 1909 in Emanuel County, a daughter of Lucinda and Rufus Neal.
Venera and daughter Betty Lou were living with her parents near Twin City when the 1940 Emanuel County census was taken. They were recorded as follows: Venera Barfield, daughter, age 30, married, completed four years of high school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework; had no source of income in 1939; and, Betty Lou Barfield, granddaughter, age 1, born in Georgia. Ray was not present.
They had two daughters:
i. Mary Ann BARFIELD
ii. Betty Lou BARFIELD
Ray became a member of Hawhammock Baptist Church in 1955. He served the church in a number of roles, including Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School and deacon.
After working for the State Highway Department, Ray retired and made Swainsboro his permanent home.
Venera died on 27 December 1983 in Emanuel County, and was buried in Hawhammock Church Cemetery, Emanuel County.
After Venera's death, William married second Sarah Nell Ellis on 25 January 1986 in Emanuel County.
Ray died on 22 October 1987 in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia, and was buried beside his first wife, Venera, in Hawhammock Church Cemetery.

Mr. Barfield retires here
Ray Barfield has retired after having completed 36 years of employment with the State of Georgia Department of Transportation.
During a fish fry in Mr. Barfield?s honor Friday, employees of the local State Highway Department presented an inscribed plaque to the retiree.
Mr. Barfield had served as shop foreman at the local office since 1941. Prior to that time, he was with the State Highway Construction Department, traveling across the state.
Plans to relax, fish and visit are on the retired state employee?s agenda. He and Mrs. Barfield have two daughters, Mrs. Vernon (Betty Lou) Mills of Savannah and Mrs. John (Mary Ann) Lewis of Swainsboro.

Services for Mrs. William Ray (Venera Neal) Barfield, 74, of 317 Gloria St., Swainsboro, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hawhammock Baptist Church.
The Rev. Louis Pearce and the Rev. Kenneth Youmans officiated, with interment in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Barfield died Tuesday, Dec. 27, in an Emanuel County hospital.
A native of Emanuel County, she was a homemaker and a member of Hawhammock Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Betty Mills of Savannah and Mrs. Mary Ann Pearce of Swainsboro; two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Matkovich of Twin City and Mrs. Mary Mills of Bloomingdale; five brothers, James H. and Charles E. Neal, both of McRae, Virgil Neal of Twin City, Roy F. Neal of Duluth, and R. L. Neal Jr. of Forest Park; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were Cliff Mills, Kerry Mills, John Mills, John Lewis, Roger Pearce, and Roby Pearce. Honorary pallbearers were deacons of Hawhammock Baptist Church, Pete Boatright, and Scotty Hudson.
Peebles-Curry Mortuary of Swainsboro was in charge of arrangements.

William Ray Barfield
Statesboro, Ga. ? William Ray Barfield, 74, died Thursday at Bulloch County Hospital.
The funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Hawhammock Baptist Church, Swainsboro, with the Revs. Louis Pearce and Jimmy Creel officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Barfield was a native of Emanuel County and a member and deacon of Temple Baptist Church. He was retired from the maintenance division of the Georgia Department of Transportation where he worked for 39 years.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Nell Ellis Barfield; two daughters, Mary Ann Pearse, Swainsboro, and Betty Mills, Savannah; a step-daughter, Mary Nell Daugherty, Statesboro; a stepson, Ricky Ellis, Atlanta; a sister Mrs. Thelma Howell, Star, S.C.; and two brothers, the Rev. Rubin Barfield, Canal Point, Fla., and Matthew L. Barfield, Augusta.
Pallbearers will be Gary Mills, Raymond Mills, Kerry Mills, Johnny Mills, John Lewis, Tommy Neal, Cliff Mills and Wesley Mills.
Honorary pallbearers will be the men of the Temple Baptist Church and the deacons of Hawhammock Baptist Church and Pete Boatright.
Peebles-Curry funeral home is in charge of arrangements.
