    • Ella Lugenia PATRICK (Daniel D.4 Patrick, Celia3, Reubin2, Daniel1), a daughter of Martha E. and Daniel D. Patrick, was born on 6 May 1869 in Bryan County, Georgia. At age one, she was included in her parents' household in the 1870 Bryan County census, and she was named as a daughter, age 11, in the 1880 Bryan County census and, as age 31 in the 1900 Bryan County census.

      She married Bridger J. Hughes on 8 June 1903 in Bryan County, Georgia. He was born on 18 July 1853 in Bulloch County, Georgia, a son of Delia Ann Burnsed and John Dennis Benjamin Hughes. He had been married previously to Ella Kuhlman. Ella Lugenia's marriage came with a "built-in" family and she added children to the existing brood.

      Ella, Bridger, and family, were recorded in the 1910 Bulloch County, Georgia census as follows: Bridges J. Hughes, head, age 54, married twice, married 7 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, could read and write; Ella, wife, age 43, married once, married 7 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, could read and write; Nellie S., daughter, age 16; Elias G., son age 15; Lily M, daughter, age 11; Velma, daughter, age 6, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, attends school, cannot read, can write; Lucile, daughter, age 4, born in daughter, parents born in Georgia; Daniel B., son, age 3, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Ella, daughter, age 11 months, born in Georgia, and parents born in Georgia.

      In the 1920 Bulloch County census, they were enumerated as follows: Bridges J. Hughes, head, owns head, age 65, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm; Ella, wife, age 48, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Velma, daughter, age 16, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Lucile, daughter, age 14, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Carlton, son age 1 2, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Elabell, daughter, age 11, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and Christine, daughter, age 7, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      Ella and Bridger had five children:

      Bridger died 17 February 1924 in Bulloch County, Georgia and was buried in Ash Branch Cemetery.

      When the 1930 census was taken, Ella, and those children remaining at home, had moved to Pembroke, Bryan County. The family was recorded as follows: Ella Hughes, head, owns home valued at $2,500, does not live on a farm, age 60, widow, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, no occupation; Carlton, son, age 22, single, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, no occupation; Ellabelle, age 20, daughter, single, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and Christine, daughter, age 18, single, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      In 1935, Ella and the three youngest daughters were recorded in the Duval County, Florida Population census as follows: E. L. Hughes, 55 W. 11th Street, inside city limits, female, age 65, white, Widow, born in Georgia, grammar school education, renter, housekeeper; Lucile, age 28, daughter, white, born in Georgia, occupation is clerk; Ella Belle, age 24, daughter, white, born in Georgia, occupation is clerk; and, Christine, age 22, daughter, white, born in Georgia, occupation is clerk.

      Ella was recorded in the 1935-1938 Jacksonville city directories as: Ella L. Hughes (widow of Bridger J.) householder 55 W. 11th Street. Lucille lived with her during those years, as did some of the other children.

      Ella lived at 411 West Eight Street in a rented house, $25 rental, in Jacksonville when the 1940 census was taken. She and two daughters were recorded as follows: Ella L. Hughes, answered census questions, head, widow, age 65, completed 8 years of education, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, was not working the week of 24 March, engaged in housework, did not work in 1939, had no source of income; Lucille Hughes, daughter, age 32, single, completed two years of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, was working the week of 24 March, worked 48 hours the week of 24 March, assistant credit manager, department store, worked for wages, worked 52 weeks in 1939, had a salary of $1000 in 1939, had no other income; and, Christine I. Hughes, daughter, age 29, single, completed two years of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, was working the week of 24 March, worked 56 hours the week of 24 March, trained nurse, hospital, worked for wages, worked 52 weeks in 1939, had a salary of $840 in 1939, had no other income.

      In 1945 Ella was recorded in the Florida Population census living with her daughter and son-law in Duval County as follows: Ella Hughes, 325 W. Church, age 75, born in Georgia, 8th grade education, housewife; Hurbert Brewerton, 325 W. Church, age 46, born in Louisiana, 8th grade education, book---?; and, Lucille Brewerton, 325 W. Church, age 38, born in Georgia, 8th grade education, saleslady.

      Ella died on 27 September 1950 in Jacksonville, Duval County, and was buried beside Bridger at Ash Branch Cemetery.
