    • William Jacob HOOKS (Nancy Missouri4 Burt, Mary Ann3, Reubin2, Daniel1), a son of Nancy Missouri Burt and Jeremiah Hooks, was born in Emanuel County, Georgia, in October 1872. He was recorded as a son, age 8, in his parents' household in the 1880 Emanuel County census.

      He married Emma Stroud on 10 January 1894 in Emanuel County. She reputedly was born on 24 May 1871 in Gillisonville, Jasper County, South Carolina, a daughter of Hinnard Stroud.

      They had nine children:

      The 1900 Emanuel County census recorded the family as follows: Willie Hooks, head, born October 1872, age 27, married 5 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer; Emma, wife, born May 1873, age 27, married 5 years, mother of three children of whom all were living, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; William K., son, born January 1896, age 4, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Jerry H., son, born November 1897, age 2, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and Margaret, daughter, born September 1899, age 8 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      The growing family was recorded in the 1910 Emanuel County census as follows: Willie J. Hook, head, age 37, married 14 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, was working at time of the census, could read and write, owned home, free of mortgage; Emma, wife, age 36, married 14 years, mother of seven living children, born in South Carolina, parents born in Georgia, could read and write; Kenneth, son, age 13, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina, farm laborer, home farm, wage earner, was working at time of the census, attended school, could read and write; Hinnard, son, age 12, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina, farm laborer, home farm, wage earner, was working at time of the census, attended school, could read and write; Margeratte, daughter, age 10, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina, attended school, could read and write; Hugh, son, age 9, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina, attended school, could read and write; Arnold, son, age 7, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina; Willie, son, age 5, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina; and, Rosland, son, age 3, born in Georgia, father born in Georgia, mother born in South Carolina.

      William registered for the World War I draft in Swainsboro on 12 September 1918. His registration card provided the following information: William Jacob Hooks; post office address, Garfield, Emanuel County, Georgia; age 45; born 6 October 1872; natural born citizen; occupation, farmer; self-employed; nearest relative, Emma Hooks, wife, of Garfield; signed W. J. Hooks; physical description: tall, slender build, brown eyes, black hair, and no physical disqualifications.

      William was recorded in the 1920 Emanuel County census alone. The census provided the following information: Will J. Hooks, head, owned home, mortgaged, lived on a farm, age 47, married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, employer.5 Kenneth, Hinnard, and Hugh were in Florida in 1920. The other family members have not been located in 1920, as of this date.

      The 1923 Savannah, Georgia city directory listed Mrs. Emma S. Hooks as a resident of 1018 W. 35th Street; Hugh L. Hooks, machinist for A.C.L., a resident of 1018 W. 35th Street; Kenneth Hooks (Beatrice), electric plater, worked at 40 Jefferson Street, resident of W. 35th Street; Roslyn Hooks, worked at Chatham Bicycle Co., resident of W. 35th Street; and, Wm. Hooks, worked at Kehoe?s, resident of W. 35th Street.

      According to the listings of the 1924 Savannah city directory. William was not a resident of Savannah. However, Mrs. Emma S, Hooks was a resident of 1018 W. 35th Street and two sons resided with her: Hugh L. Hooks, worked at A.C.L., resident of 1018 W. 35th Street; and Ross Hooks, mechanic at G. L. Helmly, resident of 1018 W. 35th Street. Ross and his wife Emma were listed in the 1924-1925 Tuscaloosa city directory as follows: Ross M. Hooks (Emma), worked at lab, resident of Kaulton Street.

      By 1926 the Savannah city directory listed Emma S. Hooks as a widow of W. J. Hooks and she resided at 742 E. 31st Street. Living with her was Hugh L. Hooks, worked as a boilermaker for A.C.L.11

      Emma moved to Birmingham, Alabama by 1927 and was listed in the city directory as Mrs. Emma S. Hooks, a resident of 707 N. 43rd Street, with Wm. Hooks, who worked as a helper. This William might be her husband or her son, but most likely her son.

      In the 1928 Birmingham directory, Emma S. Hooks was listed as the widow W. J. Hooks and she resided at 818 N. 43rd Street. Living with her were three sons: B. Roslyn Hooks, worked as a welder, and his wife Dollie; Ronald E. Hooks, who worked as a machinist; and, Wm. J. Hooks, who also worked as a machinist. Her son Kenneth Hooks worked as a welder for Welded Products Co, and he was a resident of Tarrant City.

      By 1930, Emma resided with son Kenneth and his family in New Orleans, Louisiana. The 1930 Orleans County census recorded her as follows: Emma Hooks, mother, age 53, widowed, could read and write, born in South Carolina, parents born in Georgia.

      According to the 1932 New Orleans city directory, Emma S. Hooks still was listed as a widow of William and she resided at 2165 N. Tonti Street. She lived with her son, Michl. A. Hooks, who worked as a welder at Equitable Equipment Co., Inc. Son Kenneth Hooks, worked as a master mechanic, also at Equitable Equipment Co., Inc., but lived at 2231 Elysian Fields Avenue. Ronald E. Hooks also worked at Equitable Equipment Co., Inc., and resided at 437 Clermont Street.

      The 1939 Port Arthur, Texas city directory listed Emma S. Hooks (widow Wm. J.) with Bertie R. Hooks and his wife Dollie and two children. Bertie was employed as a welder for Texas Co. at WS Sassine Avenue. The family resided at 2 S Country Club Road.16 The 1940 Port Arthur city directory provided the same information as the 1939 directory.

      The 1940 Jefferson County, Texas census recorded Emma living with her son Ross and his family in Sassine Heights, a suburb of Port Arthur. Ross owned his house which was valued at $1500. The family information provided by the census included: Ross Hooks, head, age 33, married, completed six grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 36 hours the week of 24 March, electric welder for petrol refining company, wage earner, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $2246 in wages in 1939, had no other source of income in 1939; Dolly Hooks, answered census questions, wife, age 36, married, completed eight grades of school, born in Alabama, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no income in 1939; Ross Hooks Jr., son, age 12, attended school, completed six grades of school, born in Alabama, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935; Van Ray Hooks, son, age 10, attended school, completed three grades of school, born in Texas, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935; and, Emma S. Hooks, mother, age 69, widow, completed four years of high school, born in South Carolina, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, unable to work, had no source of income in 1939.

      Emma died on 8 May 1940 in Sassine Heights, Jefferson County, Texas, and was buried in Birmingham, Alabama.

      William possibly died in Georgia between 1920 and 1923; no record of death has been located, nor has a burial site.
