    • Thomas Pelie BOATRIGHT Sr., (John3, Reubin2, Daniel1), the tenth and youngest child of Nancy Deal and John Boatright, was born on 6 March 1897 in Garfield, Emanuel County, Georgia. He was named as a son, aged 3 years, in his parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census, and as aged 12 years in the 1910 census. He also was named as a surviving brother in the obituaries of: Nancy America Boatright, 1939; Ruben Boatright, 1947; William Boatright, 1950; Benjamin Boatright, 1951; Kate Boatright Griffith, 1952; Mittie Missouri Boatright Hill Meeker, 1956; and Celia Boatright Findley, 1971.

      He married Hedy Roberts, daughter of Mary Maria Hann and Jasper H. Roberts, on 26 September 1915 in Emanuel County. She was born on 28 July 1898 in Emanuel County.

      Tom registered for the World War I draft on 5 June 1918 in the 1429th GMD, Emanuel County. The draft registration card provided the following information: Tommie P. Boatright; age 21; post office address: Rt. 2, Garfield, Georgia; born 6 March 1897; natural born citizen; born in Garfield; occupation: farmer, employed by [can?t read?] B. Boatright, Garfield; dependents: wife and mother; married; claimed exemption because of dependents; signed T. P. Boatright; physical description: medium height, medium build, brown eyes, dark brown hair, not bald; no physical disabilities.

      In the 1920 Emanuel County census, the family included: Tommy P. Boatright, rents home, age 22, could read and write, born in Georgia, father and mother born in Georgia, farmer; and Heady, wife, age 20, could read and write, born in Georgia, father and mother born in Georgia.

      The 1930 Emanuel County census recorded the growing family as follows: Thomas P. Boatright, head, rented home, lived on farm, age 33, age 18 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, self-employed, was working at the time the census was taken; Hedy, wife, homemaker, age 30, age 16 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; John B., son, age 10, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Bernice, daughter, age 8, attended school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Robert, son, age 5, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Hellen, daughter, age 3 years and 11 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Hubert, son, age 3 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      Tom and family were living on a farm outside of Garfield when the 1940 Emanuel County census was taken. The house, valued at $500, was owned by Tom. Additional details on family members included the following: Thomas P. Boatright, head, age 42, married, completed three grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 48 hours the week of 24 Mach, farmer, worked on own account, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned no wages in 1939, had other sources of income in 1939; Hedy Boatright, answered census questions, wife, age 40, married, completed one year of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no income in 1939; Bernice Boatright, daughter, age 17, attended school, completed one year of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, student, had mo income in 1939; Robert W.       Tom was a farmer in Emanuel County for his entire life.

      Randall, Tom and Hedy's youngest son was accidentally shot and killed by a cousin on 24 February 1951. Although his obituary indicates that he was buried at Noon Day Church Cemetery, there is a gravestone marker for him at Hawhammock Cemetery, Swainsboro.

      In an interesting 1934 social item in an area newspaper, Hedy and Tom gave a barbecue dinner for relatives and friends. The participation of a string band at the occasion must have made it a special event, particularly during those depression years.

      Tom and Hedy were received into Hawhammock Baptist Church by letter on 16 November 1952.

      Hedy died on 24 May 1971 in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. She was buried on 26 May 1971 in Hawhammock Cemetery, Emanuel County.

      Tom died on 3 March 1974 in Millen, Jenkins County, Georgia, and was buried on 5 March 1974 beside his wife in Hawhammock Church Cemetery. At the time of his death, his residence was Twin City, Emanuel County.
