    • Josie BOATRIGHT (John3, Reubin2, Daniel1), the sixth child of Nancy Deal and John Boatright, was born on 25 November 1889 in Emanuel County, Georgia. She was named as a daughter, aged 10 years, in her parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census, and as aged 19 years in the 1910 census. She also was listed as a surviving sister in the obituaries of: Nancy America Boatright, 1939; Ruben Boatright, 1947; William Boatright, 1950;6 Benjamin Boatright, 1951;7 Kate Boatright Griffith, 1952; Mittie Missouri Boatright Hill Meeker, 1956; Celia Boatright Findley, 1971; Thomas Pelie Boatright, 1974; Daniel Douglas Boatright, 1974; and Robert Lewis Boatright, 1975.

      Josie first married Newton Herschel Sykes in Jenkins County on 15 November 1911. N. H. was born 8 June 1878.

      They had three children:

      i. Carl B. SYKES
      ii. Vashti SYKES
      iii. Joseph Harley "Tank" SYKES

      Newton registered for the World War I military draft in Emanuel County on 12 September 1918. His draft registration card included the following information: Newton Herschel Sikes; post office address, Oak Park, Emanuel County, Georgia; age 44; born 8 June 1874; natural born citizen; occupation: farming, self-employed at Oak Park; nearest relative: Josie Sikes of Oak Park; signed Newton H. Sikes; physical description: tall, slender build, blue eyes, light hair; no physical disabilities.

      Within the week of his draft registration, N. H. died on 18 September 1918. He was buried in Noonday Cemetery, Canoochee, Emanuel County.

      In the 1920 Emanuel County census, the family was listed as follows: Josie Sikes, rents home, age 30, widow, could read and write, born in Georgia, father and mother born in Georgia; Carl B., son, age 7, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia; Vastie, daughter, age 5, born in Georgia; and Joseph, son, age 3, born in Georgia.

      She was included on a 1916 membership roll for Hawhammock Baptist Church as Mrs. Josie Boatright Sikes.

      As her second husband, she married Sylvester S. Smith about 1922. Sylvester was born on 15 July 1870 in Liberty County, Georgia, a son of Amanda and Adolphus J. Smith.

      Josie and family, with the exception of Carl who had left home, were recorded in the 1930 Emanuel County census as follows: Sylvester Smith, head, rented home, lived on a farm, age 59, age 23 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, self-employed, was working at the time of the census, was not a veteran; Josie, wife, housekeeper, age 39, age 22 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Vastie, daughter, age 15, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Harley, son, age 13, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; B. W., son, age 6, attended school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Vera, daughter, age 2 years and 8 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Vennie Lee, daughter, age 2 years and 8 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Roy, son, age 1 year, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      They had four children:

      i. Benjamin Vester SMITH
      ii. Vera Lou SMITH (twin)
      iii. Vennie Lee SMITH (twin)
      iv. Roy Eugene SMITH, b. 25 March 1929;
      d. 3 October 1940; buried in Oak
      Park Cemetery, Oak Park, Emanuel
      County, Georgia.

      Sylvester died on 9 July 1933 in Emanuel County, and was buried in Oak Park Cemetery.

      Josie married John C. Keen. They were divorced after Josie had a difficult married life. Nancy America Boatright's 1939 obituary noted that she (America) was survived by her sister, Mrs. J. C. Keen. After Josie's divorce, she resumed using her second married name, Smith.

      The last surviving child of John Boatright, Josie died on 22 October 1977 in Savannah, Georgia and was buried in Oak Park Cemetery, Oak Park, Emanuel County.
