    • Augustus Linford "Gus" ABERNATHY Jr., a son of Penelope Elizabeth Hooks and Augustus Linford Abernathy, was born in Emanuel County on 30 October 1911. He was named as a son, age 9, in his parents' household in the 1920 Emanuel County census and as age 18 in the 1930 Emanuel County census.

      Augustus was living in a rented house on which $5 rent was paid when he was recorded living in Ward 3 of Twin City in the 1940 Emanuel County census. He and his mother were recorded as follows: Lizzie Abernathy, answered census questions, head, age 72, widow, completed two years of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, did not work, unable to work, had no source of income; and, Augustus Abernathy, son, age 27, single, completed eight grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in the same place on 1 April 1935, was working the week of 24 March, worked 48 hours the week of 24 March, salesman at furniture store, wage earner, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned wages of $520, had no other source of income.

      He was named as a surviving brother in Ione Abernathy Williams' 1959 obituary and in Jeremiah Linford Abernathy's 1972 obituary. He was a resident of Statesboro, Georgia, in 1959 and of Decatur, Georgia, in 1972.

      Augustus enlisted in the Army during World War II. His enlistment papers provided the following information: Augustus Abernathy; Birth Year: 1911; Race: White, citizen; Nativity State: Georgia; Residence: Emanuel County, Georgia; Enlistment Date: 14 August 1942; Enlistment Place: Fort McPherson, Atlanta, Georgia; Branch: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA; Grade: Private; Term of Enlistment: Enlistment for the duration of the War; Component: Selectees (Enlisted Men); Source: Civil Life; Education: Grammar school; Civil Occupation: Bandsman, Oboe or Parts Clerk, Automobile; Marital Status: Single, with dependents; Height: 71 inches; Weight: 182 pounds.

      He died in DeKalb County, Georgia on 9 November 1977.
