    • Rufus Steven BARFIELD, a son of Susan Frances Boatright and William Leander Barfield, was born on 28 March 1916 in Emanuel County, Georgia, a twin to his brother Ruben. He was named as a son, aged 3 years and 9 months, in his parents' household in the 1920 Emanuel County census and as age 14 in his mother's household in the 1930 census. He also was listed as a surviving son in his mother's 1953 obituary, and as a surviving brother in Ledora Barfield Britt's 1943 obituary, and in James Brinson Barfield's 1967 obituary. His residence, as noted in all three obituaries, was in Greenville, South Carolina.

      He married Opal Brown on 16 October 1938. She was born on 26 May 1918 in Elberton, Georgia, a daughter of Annie Evans and Paul C. Brown.

      They were living on a farm outside of Swainsboro when the 1940 Emanuel County census was taken. They rented their house for $10 a month. The census provided the following details: Rufus Barfield, head, age 24, married, completed six grades of school, born in Georgia, lived on a farm in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 40 hours the week of 24 March, laborer on a farm, wage earner, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $208 in wages in 1939, had no other source of income in 1939; Opel Barfield, wife, age 22, married, completed four years of high school, born in Georgia, lived on a farm in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no income in 1939; and, Rufus P. Barfield, son, age 3 months, born in Georgia. They were living next to Rufus? mother at that time.

      They were recorded in the 1945 Greenville, South Carolina, city directory living with his brother Ruben. The listing contained the following information: Rufus S. Barfield (Opal), machinist operator, Gaylord Container, residence 7a 9th Avenue (Judson Mills No 2), householder.

      They had four children:

      ii. Billy BARFIELD
      iii. Larry BARFIELD
      iv. Anne BARFIELD

      Rufus died on 11 June 1970 in Greenville and was buried in Graceland Memorial Cemetery West.

      Opal died on 11 June 2007 also in Greenville and was buried beside Rufus.
