    • Benjamin Vester SMITH (Josie4, John3, Reubin2, Daniel1), a son of Josie Boatright and Sylvester S. Smith, was born on 15 December 1923 in Statesboro, Bulloch County, Georgia. He was named as a son, age 6, in his parents' household in the 1930 Emanuel County census. He also was named as a son in his mother's 1977 obituary. In addition, he was named as a surviving brother in the 1995 obituary of Carl B. Sykes and in Vashti Sykes Williamson's 2010 obituary.

      Ben was in the army and stationed at Fort William Davis Military Reservation, Cristobal, Panama Canal when the 1940 census was taken. He was recorded there, as follows: Benjamin V. Smith, age 19, single, completed four grades of school, born in Georgia, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 52 hours the week of 24 March, Private in U.S. Army, wage earner, government employee, worked 52 weeks in 1939.

      He married Elizabeth Russom about 1949. She was born on 16 April 1933 in Abbeville, Wilcox County, Georgia, a daughter of Ruby Griffin and John E. Russom.

      They had three children:

      i. Phyllis SMITH
      ii. Bobby Eddie SMITH
      iii. Debbie SMITH

      They lived at 1930 E. Macon Street in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia, during the years, 1952, 1958 and 1960 when they were listed in the Savannah city directories. In 1952 Ben was a crane operator for Savannah Machine; in 1958, and engineer for Chemical Construction; and, in 1960, and operating engineer for Raymond Cement and East Coast Diving & Salvage.

      Elizabeth died in Savannah on 3 December 2011 and was buried in Greenwich section of Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah.

      Ben died on 10 June 2011 in Savannah and was buried beside Elizabeth at Bonaventure Cemetery.
