    • Alice LANIER, a daughter of Harriet Wallace and Allen Lanier, was born on 25 January 1894 in Emanuel County, Georgia. She was named as a daughter, age 6, in her parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census. She also was named as a surviving sister in Thomas C. Lanier's 1948 obituary, Robert Allen Lanier's 1954 obituary, Maude Lanier Durden's 1964 obituary, Georgia Viola Lanier's 1965 obituary, and James Elson Lanier's 1971 obituary. During those dates, she was a resident of Miami, Dade County, Florida.

      She first married Algie L. Parish on 30 May 1909 in Emanuel County. He was born 15 September 1886 in Georgia. When the 1910 Emanuel County on census was taken, they were residing on the Stillmore-Metter Road. They were recorded as follows: Algie L. Parrish, head, age 23, married once, married 1 year, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, owned farm, could read and write, owned house; and, Alice, wife, 18, married once, mother of no children, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, could read and write.

      They had the following children:

      Algie died on 15 December 1917 and was buried at Rosemary Church Cemetery, Candler County.

      Alice was left as head of household with three small children and another one to be born soon after Algie's death. Thirteen months later, their son A. W. died. He was buried beside his father at Rosemary. Alice supported her family on the meager income of a sales clerk at a Metter 10˘ store. When the 1920 Candler County census was taken, Alice and family were recorded as follows: Alice Parish, head, rented home, age 25, widow, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, salesman, 10˘ store, wage earner; Ellen, daughter, age 3 years and 6 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Leonard, son, 2 years and 2 months, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Enna, daughter, 1 year and 1 month, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      About 1921 Alice married Herbert W. McCorkle. He was born in Georgia on 7 August 1896, a son of Elizabeth and Arch T. McCorkle. He had served as a private in World War I in Georgia 504 Motorized Truck Company

      They moved to Miami, Florida around 1925. They were recorded in the 1930 Dade County census as follows: Herbert W. McCorkle, head, rented home, age 32, married first at age 20, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, barber, barber shop, wage earner, was working at time of the census, was not a veteran; Alice, wife, housekeeper, age 34, married first at age 23, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, cannot read occupation, wage earner, was working at time of the census; Leonard P. Parrish, son, age 17, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, clerk, stock ???, wage earner, was working at time of the census; Erma Parrish, daughter, age 14, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Mildred McCorkle, daughter, age 8, attended school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Betty McCorkle, daughter, age 3, attended school, born in Florida, parents born in Georgia.

      The family was recorded in Dade County during the 1935 Florida Population census. The information provided includes: Herbert W. McCorkle, 662 NW 31st Terrace, inside Miami city limits, age 39, white, husband, born in Georgia, high school education, rents home, barber; Alice McCorkle, age 40, wife, born in Georgia, high school education, seamstress; Irma Parrish, age 20, step-daughter, born in Georgia, high school education, waitress; Bettie McCorkle, age 9, daughter, born in Florida, 4th grade, student; and, Mildred McCorkle, age 13, daughter, born in Georgia, junior high school, school girl.

      They had the following children:

      Alice was a seamstress for Brown Carpet & Drapery Shop, Herbert was a painter, and they resided at 662 NW 31st Terrace according to the listing in the 1937 Miami city directory.

      At some unidentified date between 1937 and 1940, Alice and Herbert were divorced.

      Alice and daughter Betty were living in a rented house, $20 monthly rental, at 75 NW 31st Street, Miami, when the 1940 census was recorded. The information provided included the following: Alice McCorkle, answered census questions, head, age 48, divorced, completed nine years of education, Born in Georgia, lived in same place on 1 April 1935, was working the week of 24 March, worked 48 hours, seamstress, retail drapery, paid wages, worked 52 weeks in 1939, paid wages of $936 in 1939, had no other income; and, Betty McCorkle, daughter, age 13, attended school, completed eight years of school, born in Georgia, lived in same place on 1 April 1935.

      In 1942, Alice was listed in the Miami city directory as a seamstress at Brown Carpet & Drapery Shop and she was living at Apt. 10, 75 NE 31st Street. Herbert was still a barber for John C. Miller and he resided at 5101 SW 8th Street.

      The 1945 Florida state census recorded Alice in Miami, Precinct No. 44, as follows: Alice McCorkle, 75 NW 31st Street, born in Georgia, nine grades of education, and seamstress.

      Herbert died in Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, on 25 March 1971 and was buried near his parents at Clito Cemetery, Bulloch County, Georgia.

      Alice died in Miami on 29 July 1976.
