    • Adam Gilbert LANIER, a son of Harriet Wallace and Allen Lanier, was born on 31 March 1887 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He was named as a son, age 12, in his parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census, and as age 22 in the 1910 Emanuel County census. He also was named as a surviving brother in Thomas C. Lanier's 1948 obituary, in Robert Allen Lanier's 1954 obituary, Maude Lanier Durden's 1964 obituary, and Georgia Viola Lanier Olliff's 1965 obituary. He was a resident of Atlanta, Georgia in 1954 and 1964, but had moved to Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia by 1965. He later returned to Atlanta.

      He married Leila Williams in Emanuel County on 2 January 1910. She was born about 1891 in Georgia.

      They had two children:

      i. Fred Walter LANIER
      ii. Mabel LANIER

      Adam registered for the World War I draft in the 1734th GMD, Candler County on 5 June 1917. His draft registration card provided the following information: Adam Gilbert Lanier; address: RFD #3, Summit, Candler County, Georgia; age 30; born 31 March 1887; natural born citizen; born in Emanuel County, Georgia; occupation: self-employed; dependents: wife and two children; married; signed Adam Gilbert Lanier; physical description: blue eyes, light hair, medium height, medium build; no physical disabilities.

      Adam and family were in Atlanta, Georgia by 1927. They were listed in the Atlanta city directory in 1927 as: Adam G. Lanier (Leila,) bricklayer, resident of 115 Norfolk Street NW. In 1929, the city directory listed them as: Adam G. Lanier (Leila), bricklayer, resident of 516 Cairo NW.

      They were recorded in the 1930 Fulton County, Georgia census as residing at 215 Georgia Avenue NE. Additional information follows: A. G. Lanier, head, rented home at $25 rental, owned a radio, did not live on a farm, age 44, age 23 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, stone mason, building contractor, wage earner, was working at time of the census, was not a veteran; Lela, wife, housekeeper, age 40, age 19 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Walter, son, age 19, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, station inspector?, oil refinery, wage earner, was working at time of the census; and, Mable, daughter, age 17, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, saleslady, department store, wage earner, was working at time of the census.

      By 1932, the city directory listed them as: Adam G. Lanier (Leila), bricklayer, resident of 536 Glen Iris Drive NE. The city directory for 1936, 1937 and 1938 listed them as residents of 538 Morgan Street NE and Adam?s occupation remained the same.

      By 1940, they owned their home, valued at $1800, at 366 Clermont Road in Cross Keys, DeKalb County, Georgia. The DeKalb County census also provided the following information: Adam G. Lanier, head, age 53, married, completed five grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in Atlanta, Georgia on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 45 hours the week of 24 March, brick contractor, building construction, worked on own account, worked 42 weeks in 1939, earned no wages in 1939, had other sources of income in 1939, father born in Georgia, mother born in Georgia, spoke English in childhood home, had a Social Security number, deductions were made from part of income for Social Security in 1939; Lela Lanier, answered census questions, wife, age 49, married, completed six grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in Atlanta, Georgia on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no income in 1939; Mabel Lanier, daughter, age 27, single, completed three grades of high school, born in Georgia, lived in Atlanta, Georgia on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 49 hours the week of 24 March, division manager, dry goods department store mail order, wage earner, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $1300 in wages in 1939, had no other source of income in 1939; and, Geneva Lanier, niece, age 23, single, completed three grades of high school, born in Georgia, lived in Atlanta, Georgia on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 44 hours the week of 24 March, site clerk, mail order store, wage earner, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned $780 in wages in 1939, had no other source of income in 1939.

      The Atlanta city directory for 1954 listed Adam and Leila as follows: Adam G. Lanier (Leila L.), building contractor, 3215 Clairmont Road (DeKalb Co.), residence at same address.

      Leila died on 19 May 1954 in Atlanta, Dekalb County, Georgia.

      Adam died on 18 October 1971, also in Atlanta.
