    • Ada DURDEN Elmira Josephine4, Daniel D.3, Reubin2, Daniel1), daughter of Elmira Josephine Boatright and Ebenezer P. Durden, was born on 11 December 1881 in Emanuel County, Georgia. She was named as a daughter, aged 18 years, in her parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census. She also was named as a surviving daughter in her father's 1943 obituary and in her mother's 1949 obituary. In addition, she was named as a surviving sister in Willie O. Durden's 1956 obituary, Daniel Homer Durden Sr.'s 1963 obituary, Lillie Durden Brown's 1964 obituary, E. Loyd Durden's 1969 obituary, and in Nannie Durden Allmond's 1970 obituary.

      She married General Belah Mercer on 2 November 1901 in Bulloch County, Georgia. He was born on 6 November 1875 in Bulloch County, a son of Eliza Green and Benjamin Mercer.

      They were recorded in the 1910 Bulloch County census as follows: General B. Mercer, head, age 34, married once, married 8 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, owns farm free of mortgage, could read and write; and, Ada, wife, age 25, married once, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, could read and write.

      They had five children:

      iv. Sadie Ruth MERCER
      v. Belah B. MERCER

      Belah registered for the World War I draft in Candler County on 12 September 1918. His draft registration card provided the following information: General B. Mercer; Post Office address, Parrish, Candler County, Georgia; age 42; born 6 November 1875; natural born citizen; occupation, farming at Parrish; nearest relative, Ada Durden of Parrish; signed G. B. Mercer; physical description: medium height, stout build, grey eyes, dark hair, and no physical disabilities.

      The family was recorded in the 1920 Candler County, Georgia, census as follows: G. B. Mercer, head, owns farm, age 43, could read and write born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer; Ada, wife, age 38, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Rupert P., son age 9, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Sadie Ruth, daughter, age 6, attends school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Liza Joe, daughter, age 4, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Ben E. H., son, age 1-1/2 years, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      The 1930 Candler County census enumerated the family as: G. B. Mercer, head, owned home, lived on farm, age 53, age 25 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, self-employed, was working at time the census was taken; Ada, wife, age 48, age 20 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Rupert, son, age 19, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Sadie, daughter, age 17, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Liza Jo, daughter, 14, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Ben, son, age 11, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Belah, son, age 8, attended school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; and, Edna Allmond, niece, age 18, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia.

      They were recorded in the Pulaski community of Candler County in the 1940 census. They owned their house, valued at $2500, in which they had lived for several years. The information provided by the census included the following: General B. Mercer, answered the census questions, head, age 64, married, completed seven grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 60 hours the week of 24 March, farmer, employer, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned no wages in 1939, had other sources of income in 1939; Ada Mercer, wife, age 58, married, completed one year of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no source of income in 1939; Ben E. Mercer, son, age 21, single, completed three years of high school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 50 hours the week of 24 March, laborer on a farm, non-paid family worker, worked 52 weeks in 1939, had no source of income in 1939; and, Belah Mercer, son, age 17, attended school, completed three grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in the same house on 1 April 1935, student, had no source of income in 1939.

      G. B. died in Candler County on 16 September 1943 and was buried at Lake Cemetery near Metter, Candler County.

      Ada died in Metter, Candler County, on 19 May 1972 and was buried beside her husband at Lake Cemetery.
