    • Matthew Lewis BOATRIGHT (Stephen Thomas3, Reubin2, Daniel1), the oldest child of Dora Logue and Stephen Thomas Boatright, was born on 11 April 1882 in Emanuel County, Georgia. He was named as a son, aged 18 years, in his parents' household in the 1900 Emanuel County census. He also was listed as a surviving son in his mother's 1936 obituary and in his father's 1950 obituary. In addition, he was listed as a surviving brother in Ethel M. Boatright Mondy's 1947 obituary, and in Frances Boatright Barfield's 1953 obituary.

      He married Essie Lena Coleman on 10 September 1905 in Wilcox County, Georgia. She was born on 14 April 1888 in Emanuel County, a daughter of Nancy and Andrew J. Coleman.

      The family was enumerated in the 1910 Emanuel County, Georgia census as follows: Math L. Boatright, age 28, married once, married four years, farmer, could read and write; Essie, wife, age 22, mother of two children both of whom were living, could read and write; Audrey, daughter, age 3; and Andrew C., son, age 12 months, all were born in Georgia, as were their parents.

      He registered for the World War I draft in Swainsboro, Emanuel County on 12 September 1918. His draft registration card provided the following information: Math Lewis Boatright; post office address: Rt. 1, Swainsboro; age 35; born 11 April 1882; natural born citizen; occupation: farming; nearest relative: Mrs. Essie Boatright, wife; signed Math Boatright; physical description: medium height, brown eyes, black hair.

      In the 1920 Emanuel County census, the family included: Math Boatright, age 37, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer; Essie, wife, age 32, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Audry, daughter, age 12, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia; Coleman, son, age 10, attends school, could read and write, born in Georgia; Keneth, age 8, attends school, born in Georgia; Cecil, son, age 6, attends school, born in Georgia; Osbourne, son, age 4, born in Georgia; Edward, son, age 1 year & 4 months.

      By 1930 Math's growing family was recorded in the Emanuel County census as follows: Math Boatright, head, owned home, lived on a farm, age 47, age 23 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, self-employed, was working at time of the census, was not a veteran; Essie L., wife, housekeeper, age 42, age 17 when first married, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Coleman, son, age 21, single, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, farmer, general farm, self-employed, was working at time of the census, was not a veteran; Kineth, son, age 18, single, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia, laborer, general farm, worked as member of the farm; Cecil, son, age 17, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Osborn, son, age 14, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Edward, son, age 12, attended school, could read and write, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; Nanie Dora, daughter, age 9, attended school, born in Georgia, parents born in Georgia; R.       The family lived on a farm, in a rented house, in the Nunez area when the 1940 Emanuel County census was taken. The rent was $3 a month. Information provided by the census included:

Boatright, head, age 57, married, completed four grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 60 hours the week of 24 March, farmer, worked on own account, worked 52 weeks in 1939, earned no wages in 1939, had other sources of income in 1939; Essie Boatright, answered census questions, wife, age 51, married, completed seven grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no source of income in 1939; R. James Boatright, son, age 17, single, completed five grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, was at work the week of 24 March, worked 60 hours the week of 24 March, laborer on farm, unpaid family worker, had no source of income in 1939; Mary Lena Boatright, daughter, age 14, completed six grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no source of income in 1939, father born in Georgia, mother born in Georgia, spoke English in childhood home, farmer was not a veteran; Marjorie Evelyn Boatright, granddaughter, age 14, completed five grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935, engaged in housework, had no source of income in 1939; Alton Eugene Boatright, grandson, age 12, attended school, completed four grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935; and, Rich Junior Boatright [probably Orien Lee Rich Junior], grandson, age 9, completed no grades of school, born in Georgia, lived in rural Emanuel County on 1 April 1935.

      Math and Essie had nine children:

      Although Math was a member of Hawhammock Baptist Church, church minutes record "a slip from Grace" at the May 1908 conference meeting. At that time he was reported for intemperance or intoxication. If there was any truth to the report, no record survives of any disciplinary measures taken by the church. However, he apparently left the church. He and Essie were accepted back into membership on 16 November 1952.

      Matthew died on 22 December 1953 in Swainsboro, Emanuel County and was buried 24 December in Hawhammock Church Cemetery.

      Essie died on 1 February 1959 in Emanuel County and was buried beside her husband.
